Week 2 Journal – Lin

25th Feb 2024

On Monday, we decided on the theme of the collaborative project – city farm. And everyone has conducted an in-depth understanding and investigation of the subject.

In Tuesday’s class, we completed the reading sharing. Our group had an in-depth discussion about the two movies, “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Parasite,” and the articles required to be read. This week’s reading content mainly concerns the two keywords “class system” and “society.” The real reason for people’s rewards and success is based on personal efforts and abilities. Among them, I am very interested in “Parasite”. I produced a PowerPoint presentation to explain this film. This film mainly exposes the ugliness of human nature caused by the gap between the rich and the poor in real life. “The poor have the joy of the poor, and the rich have the troubles of the rich” runs through the film. The film also explores human nature’s complexities and moral values’ ambiguities. The characters in the film are forced to compete and survive under unfair social conditions. Their actions and decisions reveal the importance of social context for individual actions and whether individuals can escape the shackles of society.

This movie also raised many questions for society. 1. Revealed the social class gap and inequality. It draws attention to social injustice and prompts rethinking and discussion of wealth disparity and social class realities. 2. Demonstrates the complexity and moral dilemmas existing in social reality. This in-depth reflection stimulates consideration of social issues such as poverty, social status, and the interaction between social classes. 3. Stimulate people’s desire for social change. Viewers may be inspired to draw attention to social inequalities and want to contribute positively to social justice and equal opportunity. I think this concept can also be brought into our topic to think about the future workspace through the level of social class.

In Wednesday’s workshop, we learned to ask questions better and identify critical issues. Our group came up with a total of 28 questions.

We went to Vauxhall City Farm with these questions on Thursday, conducted an in-depth and detailed inspection, and discussed our issues with the staff. We learned more in-depth about city farms [including their funding]. Source, whether they will eat animals, the origin and whereabouts of animals in the city farm, the tasks of volunteers, etc.]
